About National City Public Library

National City has had a public library since 1884 when Frank Kimball placed a collection of books and magazines in the room above his real estate office and allowed free borrowing of the materials. Today, the foremost concern is to create a warm and creative environment where National City residents can partake of a variety of activities both pleasant and conducive to life-long learning. National City Public Library has made a conscious effort to maintain a presence on the 'cutting edge' of technology. It was one of the first libraries in California to offer a networked CDROM collection, free public internet access, and patron access to Microsoft Office, Publisher, and other software. The library has experimented with desktop videoconference reference, room-size videoconferencing, and has a Computer Center with over 60 public access workstations.

Since 1980, National City has participated in long range planning which has evaluated all aspects of library services and collections in an effort to provide effective programs and materials. The library maintains a collection of books, videos, magazines, CD's and cassettes in both Spanish language and English language. The library has had a CDROM local area network since 1991 and is currently working with the National School District to create a system of resource sharing and personnel outsourcing.
