Using the Library

Finding books, magazines, and doing research.
Sometimes using the library can be a big job. If you are unsure, feel free to ask the Reference Librarian for help. The major duty of the Reference staff is to help you find the books, magazines, information, and answers that you came in looking for. If they can't find it, they will know what you should do next.

There are several ways to find books, magazines, and information in the library. Most of the things that people look for in a library can be found by using the catalog, magazines, newspapers, or one of the databases that the library owns. Below are descriptions of the tools for finding information and materials.

The Catalog
The library catalog helps you find library materials. You can connect to our online catalog now or use one of the dedicated searching stations in our library. You search by Title, Author or Subject, or Keyword. (A keyword search will look in more places for occurrences of that word and probably find more matches.)

Magazine Articles
Most libraries have various magazine article databases in addition to current copies of magazines.

Encyclopedias and Books
The library owns electronic versions (computer-based) encyclopedias as well as hard copies (regular books). Here are some of the encyclopedias and other book-related databases that NCPL owns. See the database page for more.

Children's Room
The Children's Room has a wide selection of educational CDROMS, homework sites, and more. Visit the Children's Room for help. You may also use the online resources on the Children's website.
